OAKLEY -- A virtual unknown from Vacaville will be going head-to-head with state Assemblyman Jim Frazier in November.

Although Republican candidate Alex Henthorn didn't garner the level of support that Frazier, D-Oakley, did in Tuesday's primary, election rules allow the top two vote-getters in a partisan race to move on to the general election.

With some vote-by-mail ballots still being counted, Henthorn had collected 15,053 votes from throughout the 11th District, compared with Frazier's 23,368, or 39.2 percent versus 60.8 percent of the as-yet unofficial results.

Henthorn, 28, has served on Vacaville's Community Services Commission since 2005, advising the City Council on matters relating to parks and recreation.

He also is a member of the Solano County Republican Central Committee.

Although he graduated in December from Sacramento State University with a bachelor's degree in communications studies, Henthorn hasn't spent the past six months politicking. Quite the opposite, he says, noting that he didn't post a single campaign sign.

Rather, he wanted to use this week's primary as an informal poll -- to see how many would vote for him because they want change, not because they know that much about his platform, Henthorn said.

But now that the election is over, he's gearing up for an all-out effort to win the Assembly seat representing portions of Contra Costa, Solano and Sacramento counties.

"Everybody will definitely hear about me," Henthorn said.

Frazier isn't feeling threatened, however.

Given that primaries typically have low turnouts among Democrats, he said he's pleased with his showing, adding that his party has significantly more registered voters than the GOP.

Moreover, Frazier said the real reason his opponent didn't have signs made is that he doesn't have a job, noting that Henthorn didn't file any expenditure reports with the Fair Political Practices Commission.

"What else is he going to say? I don't have any money?" he said.
