OAKLEY -- Looking for a way to show off your precious pooch, clever canine or majestic mutt to the community? Saturday's Dog Days of Summer at Civic Center Park, sponsored by the Oakley Chamber of Commerce, will include a dog costume contest.
"We're looking for wacky, silly, crazy, something different and unexpected," said Dr. Kristin Mattingly, president of the Oakley chamber. "We're just trying to get people who love dogs to show them off to the community and to have fun."
The dog costume begins at 12:30 p.m.
This one-day event isn't intended to replace the chamber's longtime Almond Festival, according to Mattingly.
"We're hoping to bring the businesses and the community together," she said. "We are going to see how this event goes and then decide if we will repeat it."
Mattingly said the chamber would like to focus its energy on one big event per year instead of multiple so that it can bring in the best vendors and crowd.
The Dog Days of Summer will mostly center on children's activities and musical entertainment. Children's activities will include a Kid's Zone that will feature a variety of jumpers sponsored by Oakley's Ozone Rentals, face painting and balloon animals presented by JoJo the Clown.
Throughout the day, several bands will perform a variety of music choices, including Sacramento alternative band Sucker Punch at noon; a rock, reggae, blues and fusion band from Berkeley, Basic Beat, at 3 p.m.; and Brentwood cover tunes band Love Handles at 5 p.m.
Food vendors will also be on hand for the day. Entrance to the event is free; however, there is a $5 wristband fee for unlimited use on the jumpers and a small fee for other kid's activities.
"There will be great music, food and fun for the whole family, including the dog," Mattingly said.
The event takes place from noon until 7 p.m. on Oakley's Main Street at Civic Center Park at City Hall. For more information, see the Chamber's website at www.oakleychamber.com.
