Skating toward a dream: David Delago's idea of a summer vacation is getting up before 4 a.m., driving with his parents to Dublin, skating for six hours, and then getting ready to do it all over again the next day.

But for Delago, 14 and a recent graduate of Antioch Junior High, that sort of diligence does have its rewards. His 30-hour-week practice schedule (26 hours a week during the school year) enabled him win the Pacific Coast Regional Ice Skating Championship last month and led him to a seventh-place finish in the National Championship in Baltimore.

"It was my first time there, so I was a little bit nervous," Delago said.

There is a grander destination he hopes to reach, using countless hours of practice and year-round competition as his ticket.

The Winter Olympics is Delago's Cíbola, his city of gold.

"I was want to make it to the Olympics," he said flatly. At the Pacific Coast championships, Delago was one of 13 skaters in the novice division. That by itself is not an impressive number, but the skaters get into the championships by qualifying in area championship competitions.

Unlike most sports, there is no season of competition, Delago said. After the Central California Skating Association championships last weekend, Delago has five major competitions, including the Arctic Blades in Los Angeles, before the CCSA qualifying begins this fall.
