Burglary charge reduced, sentence suspended: Clyde Brixey and Claude Barnes were led handcuffed into judicial district court yesterday morning and left free men with suspended sentences after promising to make good on money they were alleged to have stolen, part of which has been returned. The Diablo Club was broken into June 25, and about $700 taken from the safe. Later, Barnes admitted having burglarized the place, implicating Brixey. Both were arrested and held in the county jail awaiting appearance in court on a felony charge of burglary. Upon the advice of the District Attorney's Office, Judge Joe Silva permitted them to plead guilty to a reduced charge of petty theft, a misdemeanor. He gave them a six-month suspended sentence and the promise to make good the money.

Pilots bid farewell to Antioch Airport: Antioch Airport quietly closed to the public Friday as several pilots departed and then flew over the runway a final time to bid adieu. "Antioch traffic Cesana 78794 final departure runway 27" was Aaron Melgoza's way of saying goodbye to the airport he has called home since becoming a pilot several years ago.

Melgoza, of Oakley, piloted his aircraft through a circuit of the traffic pattern and passed over the runway to salute the airport. He now will move his airplane to Rio Vista.

"It's been fun" and "we'll miss you" were common radio salutes as other pilots executed their last flybys over the 43-year-old airport on Lone Tree Way.

The airport's ramp area became increasingly desolate Friday afternoon as pilots taxied their planes to the preflight check area.

Many pilots are moving their airplanes to Byron Airport, which the county is enlarging and upgrading to handle overflow air traffic from Buchanan Field Airport in Concord.

The $80 million renovation job will begin next spring with construction of the first of two runways. Much of the money will come from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Some pilots, such as Melgoza, are headed to Rio Vista or airports in Livermore and Tracy.
