BYRON -- The Patriots Jet Team Foundation will hold its annual fundraiser next month to strengthen schools' science and math curriculum.

The gala will be 5 to 10 p.m. Aug. 9 in the Patriots Jet Center at Byron Airport, 760 Osprey Court, Byron.

Tickets are $100 a person; guests also can purchase entire tables. All proceeds will benefit the Patriots Jet Team Foundation, an all-volunteer nonprofit that offers classes in aviation science out of a hangar to foster public school students' interest in technology, engineering and math.

Along with dinner and cocktails, attendees can participate in silent and live auctions, see an MiG-17 fighter jet up close, and check out exhibits from the foundation's Aerospace Academy.

The keynote speaker is Jose Hernandez, a former NASA astronaut and founder of Reaching for the Stars Foundation in Stockton.

Hernandez, who was raised as a migrant farmworker, will describe his struggle to become an electrical engineer and astronaut, as well as his efforts to interest disadvantaged youth in math and science with hands-on activities.
