ANTIOCH -- It's her second year and Antoinette Paulino is excited about raising funds for a scholarship.

But, it's not just any scholarship -- it's a tribute to her mother.

Sue Bertolani of Antioch passed away in 2005. The beloved hairdresser attended Delta Beauty College before establishing her lifelong career, and worked at a variety of shops in East County, including Super Look and Highland Hair Works in Pittsburg, and Jazzy Lass, Hair & Nail Creations and Hair Gallery in Antioch.

And, so to honor her mother, whom Paulino called her "best friend," the Sue Bertolani Scholarship Fund was established.

Last year, Paulino raised more than $3,100 for student Trena Allen, who attends the Antioch trade school.

This time around, Paulino wants to award the full $5,000 for tuition to a lucky cosmetology student.

"I was thrilled with the response I received last year and can only hope to raise the full (amount) this year," she said. "With my parents and I being longtime Antioch residents, I know there are people still living in the community (who would want to help) in honor of my mom."

The 2013 selection process was "exhilarating. (My mother) would have been so pleased to know that in her memory we are helping others to realize their dream."

Paulino, a former 49er Gold Rush and Golden State Warriors cheerleader, plans to make this a yearly scholarship.

"I wanted to keep my mother's memory alive by helping someone else achieve their goals," she said.
