ANTIOCH -- They're hell on wheels and they're out for blood -- yours. Antioch's roller derby league, the Undead Bettys, is kicking off a statewide blood drive Aug. 9.
The organization has teamed up with the American Red Cross and the ticketing company Brown Paper Tickets to solicit blood donations 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Antioch Indoor Sports Center, 1210 Sunset Drive.
The league's members will stage two coed scrimmages to entertain donors while they're extending an arm: The good-natured pushing and body checks will take place from 10:30 to 11 a.m. and 2:30 to 3 p.m.
In addition, skaters will offer autographs, photo opportunities, T-shirts, roller skate cookies, buttons and temporary tattoos to anyone who parts with a pint. The Undead Bettys also will give away a few tickets and league T-shirts.
Although walk-ins are accepted, organizers are asking would-be donors to schedule an appointment online at www.redcrossblood.org and enter the sponsor code DERBY.
The second annual "Make 'em Bleed" event also will feature blood drives hosted by seven other roller derby leagues from Santa Cruz to Santa Rosa through Oct. 18, all of which will help ease the American Red Cross' blood shortage.
On Aug. 15, the Quad City Derby Bombshells will host a blood drive from 1-7 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, 4743 East Ave. in Livermore.
