ANTIOCH -- As new business owners in downtown Antioch, Debbie Blaisure and partner Toni Lincks already have an idea what kind of challenges they are going to have getting their new antique and vintage store off the ground. The downtown area has long been a place where businesses struggle to attract attention and clientele. In hopes to attracting people from the start, the partners have decided to open with a big splash and keep the excitement going.
"We've been getting so much support from the locals, city and chamber that we want to bring people here to see not only what we have to offer, but the other downtown businesses as well," Blaisure said.
Blaisure and Lincks are opening Deb and Tyls' Oddly Unique. The store features everything from antiques and collectibles, to vintage items, to shoes, to jewelry and glassware. The partners opened their store in June, after spending a longtime selling their wares in a Brentwood Co-op store.
"Having our own store has always been a passion and dream for both of ours," Blaisure said. "We expanded a little and placed everything in the store with a unique display."
Since there are a few other recently opened businesses in the downtown area, Blaisure decided to not just host a ribbon cutting-grand opening for her business, but to invite other neighboring businesses to do the same on the same day to increase awareness and encourage attendance.
She spoke with her neighboring business and friend Josie Monaghan from the Veterans' Thrift Shop and started making plans about the Aug. 30 ribbon cutting event. To date, five downtown stores will host activities on the same day. The Antioch Chamber got involved and started advertising the event with Blaisure and Monaghan's help.
The activities will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with businesses located on Second and G streets. (Deb and Tyls' Oddly Unique is at 209 G St.)
Blaisure invites all to come and see their wares Monday through Friday between 2 and 9 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
