Quarterback Michael Behr's 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference as the host Los Medanos College football team beat Redwoods 47-40 in a Bay Valley Conference game Saturday that had seven lead changes.

With Los Medanos (5-3, 2-1 BVC) trailing 40-39, Behr led his team on a six-play, 46-yard drive and capped the possession with his quarterback sneak. For the game, Behr completed 19 of 28 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns. It was the third straight loss for Redwoods (3-5, 0-3).

"It was a matter of keeping our composure," Mustangs coach Chris Shipe said. "(Redwoods) did a good job at pressuring our quarterback, so we had to get back to the basics of our run game to get the victory."

Redwoods led 14-9 early in the second quarter when freshmen running back Matt Smith broke five tackles on a 51-yard touchdown run that gave Los Medanos the lead. The Mustangs went ahead by 10 points when Behr's deep pass over the middle found Terrance Polk for a 65-yard touchdown pass to give his team a 24-14 lead at halftime.

Redwoods cut into that lead with its first possession of the third quarter, as running back Dominic Wooten finished off a seven-play, 65 yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run. Behr was then picked off by Corsairs defensive back Marc Stewart, who returned it 24 yards for a touchdown that gave Redwoods a 26-24 lead.

Trailing 32-24 in the fourth quarter, the Mustangs took advantage of a Redwoods defense that was looking to stop the run, as Behr lobbed a screen pass to running back Shawn Vasquez for a 23-yard touchdown.

Los Medanos' biggest defensive play came on the Corsairs' next possession, as linebacker Willie Thompson surged into the backfield and stripped the ball from Corsairs quarterback Matt Sullivan. Thompson picked up the ball and returned it 25-yards for a touchdowns as Los Medanos took a 39-32 lead. Redwoods retook the lead as receiver Aubrey Reed caught a 36-yard touchdowns pass and ran in a two-point conversion.

After Behr's short touchdown run in the fourth quarter, Smith capped the scoring with a two-point conversion run.

For Los Medanos, sophomore defensive back Travis Steen had two interceptions and seven tackles and Smith, who stepped in for the injured Shawn Vasquez, had 165 yards rushing. Polk had 142 yards receiving.

"My offensive line did a great job today," Smith said. "(Vasquez) has helped me out a lot, and he helped me prepare for today. I credit his help for my performance."
