CONCORD — The Mt. Diablo school board on Tuesday continued compiling a list of potential budget cuts that includes music and sports programs, as well as district administrators. The board plans to cut at least $6.6 million from its 2009-2010 budget by February to avoid deficit spending.

But Superintendent Gary McHenry is drafting a list of up to $11 million items to consider, in case the state Legislature approves deep reductions to education funding this year that would amount to that much. Several parents urged the board not to eliminate the assistant superintendent for special education, one lobbied to retain ninth-grade class sizes of 20 students for math and English, and a middle school principal suggested charging Catholic Youth Organization basketball teams for gym rental.

The growing list of possible cuts includes elimination of all sports coaching salaries, ninth grade sports program costs, elementary music programs, the district office switchboard operator and a personnel director. The board is also considering asking parent volunteers to pay their own fingerprinting costs.

McHenry hopes to finalize the list of possible cuts by next Tuesday, when the board will meet at Northgate High School in Walnut Creek. More information is at 925-682-8000 or www.mdusd.k12.ca.gov.
