OAKLAND -- A group of Oakland student journalists who are learning the art of broadcast storytelling have won awards for their coverage.

"Turf to Life," a piece about turf dancers in Oakland, won the Award for Excellence in News from the Northern California Chapter of National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, according to a news release from Media Enterprise Alliance. Media Enterprise Alliance runs the video production program in partnership with the Oakland school district and KDOL-TV, the school district's TV station.

"Americans at Heart," about the DREAM Act, won an Award for Merit. "Turf to Life" also received the Audience Choice Award and the Power of Youth Award at the recent Project Youth View Film Festival in Alameda.
