LIVERMORE -- Transitional kindergarten that starts with plenty of STEAM is coming to four Livermore elementary schools.

The city's school district is enrolling for its new transitional kindergarten program that will have a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) focus for students turning 5 between Sept. 1 and Dec. 2.

The Students Participating in Readiness Opportunities Using Themes in Science (SPROUT) is set up as a two-year kindergarten program for those students affected by the state's change to kindergarten eligibility. This past school year, children had to turn 5 by Nov. 1 to enroll in kindergarten.

Livermore is offering the program at Altamont Creek, Jackson Avenue, and Marylin Avenue elementary schools and Michell K-8 School. Roughly 80 students have signed up so far, said Cindy Alba, the district's assistant superintendent of educational services.

In addition to prepping students for traditional kindergarten, Livermore's program will also expose students to the science and math realm, Alba said.

"We know (future) jobs are going to require a strong math and science background," Alba said. "And the kindergarten level is important to start because students at that age are problem-solvers and thinkers."

Livermore is one of several districts throughout the East Bay, including Oakland, San Lorenzo and Pleasanton, that are beginning transitional programs.

School begins Aug. 22 for Livermore
