The annual 5K Competitive Run and the Fun Run/Walk to help save sports in Mt. Diablo district high schools will take place Oct. 7 at Newhall Park at Turtle Creek in Concord.

The event helps toward the goal of raising more than $1 million to keep athletics in the districts six area high schools for the 2012-13 school season. It is a family event to which all ages are welcome.

There will be a timed competitive 5K run starting at 9 a.m. as well as fun run/walk at 9:45 a.m. and kiddie race at 10:30 a.m. The races will take place. Medals and prizes awarded for various age groups. The school with the most sign-ups will be presented with a trophy to proudly display for a year. Food and entertainment will be available.

In 2011 the group raised $60,000 and had 1,350 participants.

Registration Fees: $25 preregistered runner, $30 day of, $10 Kiddie Run. All participants that obtain $50 or more in sponsorships do not have to pay a registration fee.

    The district's special education Community Advisory Committee will host a Candidates' Question and Answer Panel from 6-7 p.m. Oct. 2 in the district office at 1936 Carlotta Drive in Concord. The candidates will be asked questions relevant to special education. While the questions will be selected in advance candidates won't know of them until the night of the event. Each candidate will be asked the same question and will have 90 seconds to respond. It is open to the public and will be followed by the committee meeting at 7 p.m.
