New York wasn't built in a day, and it will likewise take some time to re-create the Big Apple settings that will be used in the upcoming production of "West Side Story" at Contra Costa Civic Theatre in El Cerrito.
The community theater company is holding work parties starting this weekend to create and furnish the scenery for the classic 1957 musical with songs by Leonard Bernstein telling the story of forbidden love on the streets of New York.
Work parties are scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 16, 23 and 30 at CCCT, 951 Pomona Ave., and volunteers are needed to construct, dress and paint the sets and ready the stage.
The production opens July 13, with performances on weekends through Aug. 12, with a final work party the day of the last performance to strike the sets. Any assistance, even a single hour, is welcome.
Volunteers are also needed by the nonprofit theater for duties such as ushering, helping with the lighting, finding props and selling ads to local businesses. Not to mention, as CCCT does, that "There's always a need for a handyman to help with maintenance."
This could be your break into showbiz, minus the anxiety of having to perform in front of an audience. To learn more, contact Daren A.C. Carollo at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 510-524-9012.
