Reading bargains at Albany Library sale
The Friends of the Albany Library are holding a one-day 50-cent-only sale at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Edith Stone Room of the library, 1247 Marin Ave.
The sale will feature a wide variety of books and audio-visual material such as CDs and DVDs, but because of space limitations there will be no magazines or library discards offered.
Patrons who use scanners will be asked to scan books in place.
At 2:45 p.m. the room will close briefly to prepare for the 3 to 4 p.m. bag sale, when shoppers can fill a grocery bag for $3

PG&E crews repair gas leak in El Cerrito
A broken gas main was repaired Wednesday morning after a gas smell prompted firefighters to evacuate two homes.
The odor of gas was reported around midnight nea at a home on the 1300 block of Everett Street, a fire dispatcher said.
Firefighters called PG&E in about 40 minutes later and repairs were completed about 7:30 a.m., according to PG&E.
No injuries were reported.
Two homes had been evacuated, though it was unclear how many people were affected, a fire dispatcher said.
PG&E crews found the plastic pipe had been damaged by tree roots and a rodent had gnawed on it, PG&E spokeswoman Jana Morris
Gas was shut off to the portion of the pipe at 5 a.m. but no other customers lost gas service, Morris said.
El Cerrito offering tour of recycling center
The new Recycling and Environmental Resource Center in El Cerrito opened to much fanfare earlier this year and the public can see the facility and learn about its operations at a free tour from 3 to 4 p.m. Aug. 1. Free movie showing at public safety event
A free showing of the 2011 Disney-Pixar animated feature "Cars 2" will be presented by the El Cerrito Police Department at a special event at 5 p.m. Aug. 6 as part of outreach leading up to National Night Out on Aug. 7.
The family evening at Rialto Cinemas Cerrito, 10070 San Pablo Ave., will include a traffic safety presentation geared for children 3 to 10, a free small popcorn from Rialto Cinemas, a special appearance by McGruff the Crime Dog and a chance to meet and talk to police officers.
Admission is free, but seating is limited and priority will be given to El Cerrito residents.
Annual Bay to Barkers for dogs is Sunday
The 15th annual Bay to Barkers fundraiser for the Berkeley-East Bay Humane Society is noon to 4 p.m. Sunday in the north parking lot at Golden Gate Fields in Albany.
The daylong event will have fun and games for canines and humans, including doggy painting, a doggy obstacle course, crafts and face painting for children, dog games and contests, pet resource booths and the actual Bay to Barkers, which is a one-mile dog walk around the waterfront.
Berkeley Humane has a goal of raising $45,000. Registered participants will get a goody bag.

Cities promote National Night Out gatherings
Neighborhoods in Albany and El Cerrito are being encouraged by police to register and organize a block party for the National Night Out crime prevention event on Aug. 7.
The event provides residents the opportunity to establish links with each other and law enforcement, becoming educated and organized and increasing safety in the process.

Filing period opens for City Council candidates
Petitions to run City Council seats up for election in November in Albany and El Cerrito are now available. Three seats are open in each city.
Nomination papers are available in Albany at City Hall, 1000 San Pablo Ave. and in El Cerrito at City Hall, 10890 San Pablo Ave.
The deadline to file petitions is 5 p.m. Aug. 10 and the election will be held Nov. 6. Candidates may also submit a statement of up to 300 words with the petition. For more details call 510-215-4305.
