BERKELEY -- A woman walked away uninjured after she smashed her car into a fire hydrant Tuesday and the car caught on fire.
Police said the unidentified driver was going west on Ashby Avenue when the car had "some sort of mechanical difficulty." Trying to stop the car, she drove up on the sidewalk and hit the hydrant at the corner of King Street. She got out and called 911 before the car was consumed by flames police said.
Police said she did the right thing, especially since she was across the street from an elementary school where children were playing in a playground.
