O'Dowd, Piedmont win WACC titles The Bishop O'Dowd boys water polo team and the Piedmont girls water polo team won their respective divisions in the West Alameda County Conference Tournament. In the championship matches on Oct. 27 at Berkeley High, the Dragons defeated St. Patrick-St. Vincent 6-3, and the Highlanders beat Alameda 14-7. Bishop O'Dowd beat Berkeley 8-6 on Oct. 25 and Alameda 7-5 on Oct. 26, both at Contra Costa College, to reach the boys final. After a first-round bye, Piedmont defeated Bishop O'Dowd 19-5 in a girls semifinal match on Oct. 26 at Contra Costa College.
Head-Royce wins BCL-East championship The Head-Royce High girls tennis team defeated Bentley 5-2 on Oct. 23 in the Bay Counties League-East team championship match. Jenna Friedel and Kira Wang won the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches in straight sets, and College Prep won all three doubles matches. The teams of Ishani Singhal and Samantha Haigood (No. 1 singles), Evelyn Eichler and Carly Wilson (No. 2 singles) and Cassandra Liew and Victoria Basket (No. 3 singles) were all victorious.

Stars of the week Akil Bordelon, Berkeley football -- The senior caught five passes for 55 yards, including the game-winning 15-yard touchdown pass with 52 seconds remaining as the Yellowjackets stayed undefeated in the WACC-Foothill Division with a 17-14 victory over Bishop O'Dowd on Oct. 26. Austin Harper, El Cerrito football -- Harper scored on runs of 57 and 58 yards and finished with 137 yards rushing on seven carries in the Gauchos' 57-6 victory over St. Mary's on Oct. 27. Brandon Stephens, Albany football -- Stephens rushed 13 times for 71 yards and a touchdown in the Cougars' 22-13 victory over De Anza on Oct. 26. Jenna Friedel, College Prep girls tennis -- Friedel won the No. 1 singles match without dropping a game to help lead her team to a 5-2 victory over Bentley in the BCL-East team championship match on Oct. 23. Elijah Hernandez, Alameda football -- Hernandez scored on a 34-yard run and also threw a two-point conversion pass in the Hornets' 22-6 victory over San Lorenzo on Oct. 26. Kevin King, Bishop O'Dowd football -- King converted nine of his 14 pass attempts for 146 yards and a 38-yard touchdown with 5 minutes, 4 seconds to play in the Dragons' 17-14 loss to Berkeley on Oct. 26. Corey Sails, Encinal football -- Sails rushed 14 times for 151 yards and the game-winning touchdown in the Jets' 25-21 victory over San Leandro on Oct. 26. His touchdown was on a 58-yard run in the fourth quarter. Zach Spindle, Oakland Tech football -- Spindle kicked a 40-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter to give the Bulldogs a 17-14 victory over Fremont on Oct. 26.
