DANVILLE -- Mayor Newell Arnerich has announced his plan to run for the state legislature in State Assembly District 16.

He has served on the Danville Town Council for the past 18 years, including four one-year terms as mayor. Arnerich, 60, is the president and CEO of an architectural-planning firm based in Oakland and Los Angeles that he co-founded in 1978.

District 16 encompasses Lamorinda, Danville, San Ramon, Dublin and Pleasanton. Assemblywoman Joan Buchanan, D-Alamo, currently serves in the District 16 seat and will be termed out in 2014.

"There's clearly an opportunity for a new person," Arnerich said. "In Danville, we found innovative ways to provide high quality services. I think there are opportunities at the state level to do that."

Arnerich is the second to announce his plan to run for Buchanan's seat. the other is three-term Orinda Councilman and gubernatorial adviser Steve Glazer, 55.
