Here is the transcript of what St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday had to say following Game 2 against the Giants Monday night:

  • Question: Take us through play

Holliday: In hindsight, I wish I would have started my slide a step earlier. It was happening fast and you're trying to get to him so he can't turn the double play. Obviously, I hope he's OK. I know him. He's a good guy. Obviously, I wasn't trying to do anything other than keep us out of a double play."

  • Question: Respect for the way he stayed in?

Holliday: It doesn't surprise me at all. He's a great player. He's had an unbelievable second half and came up with some huge hits for them. I'm not surprised at all.

  • Question: Say anything?

Holliday: I just asked him if he was OK. He was obviously hurting. He wasn't talking. That's part of the deal. You're trying to keep us out of the double play. Every run in the postseason matters. The only regret I have is that I should have started my slide maybe a step earlier. I ended up on top of him.

  • Question: People will say that you crossed a line. How would you answer that?

Holliday: I'm not a dirty player. Like I said, I wish I had started my slide a step earlier. When you're out there in the heat of the moment, you're trying to keep your team out of the double play. I play hard and was trying to break up a double play. That's all it comes down to. I'm trying to break up a double play.
