SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants haven't set their final World Series roster yet, but they have set their rotation. Barry Zito will start Game 1 on Wednesday, followed by Madison Bumgarner, Ryan Vogelsong and Matt Cain.

Manager Bruce Bochy said Tim Lincecum will pitch out of the bullpen.

"He's better served at this point helping us out of the bullpen," Bochy said. "He gives us another weapon there. He's resilient."

Bochy said he will be able to use Lincecum in back-to-back games and for three or four innings at a time.

"He gives you more versatility in the bullpen," Bochy said. "That will help."

Zito lasted 7 2/3 innings in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series, turning the tide in a series the Giants trailed 3-1 at the time. Bochy tried to call Zito throughout the day Tuesday and was eager to give him the news, but Zito had left his phone at the ballpark after Monday's Game 7 victory.

"I was proud to tell him," Bochy said. "I told him, 'I'm glad to hand you the ball.' "

Zito was left off the postseason roster in 2010. On Wednesday he will face Justin Verlander in the World Series opener.

"I couldn't be happier for him," Bochy said. "It wasn't easy not to put him on the (2010 roster) but the way he handled it was so impressive."

Bumgarner has a 14.73 ERA in the postseason but said he has made mechanical adjustments since starting Game 1 of the NLCS. He hasn't pitched since Oct. 14 and said his body responded well to the break.

"I definitely do feel fresher," Bumgarner said.
