The Giants announced the promotion of Shane Turner to director of player development Monday.

He is entering his 19th season with the Giants and spent the past six years as the coordinator of instruction. Turner replaces Fred Stanley, who has shifted to special assistant-player personnel.

Former Giants catcher Steve Decker has been promoted to coordinator of minor league instruction and hitting. Lenn Sakata returns to manage San Jose. He replaces Andy Skeels, who becomes the hitting coach at Triple-A Fresno. Russ Morman, previously the hitting coach in Fresno, will take over as manager of Double-A Richmond.

Former Giants prospect Todd Linden will enter the coaching ranks as one of two hitting coaches at Augusta.

Gymnastics

Nicolette McNair and Kristina Vaculik finished 1-2 in the vault, but Stanford didn't win another discipline as the No. 11 Cardinal suffered its first setback of the season, 197.100-195.750 at No. 17 Oregon State. Stanford (10-1, 2-1 Pac-12) has not won at Corvallis, Ore., since the 2006 Pac-10 Championships.

McNair and Vaculik finished 2-3 in the all-around. Stanford's Shona Morgan was second in the beam and Vaculik was runner-up in the floor exercise.

Earthquakes

The team signed left back Jordan Stewart and midfielder Shea Salinas to new contracts. Stewart, 31, made 12 appearances last season, helping the club to a 7-2-3 record and seven shutouts after signing in July. Salinas, 27, led the Earthquakes with a career-high eight assists in 2013, and tied a career high with two goals.
