If someone had told California High football coach Eric Billeci that his defense would hold the East Bay Athletic League's leading rusher to just 37 yards and one touchdown on Friday, he probably would have liked his chances against host De La Salle.

But, as the Grizzlies found out, there is much more to the Spartans' offensive attack than Terron Ward and his 1,400-plus yards.

Tyler Anderson rushed for two scores, and sophomore quarterback Bart Houston threw for two and rushed for one as De La Salle claimed a 49-10 victory.

"When DLS is two-dimensional, like they were tonight, it's very difficult to stop them," Billeci said.

The win allowed the Spartans (8-2, 7-0 EBAL) to complete a perfect run through the EBAL for the second time in two years. De La Salle holds the league's automatic berth to the North Coast Section Division I tournament, and is expected to earn the top seed when the 16-team field is selected Sunday.

California (5-5, 4-3) picked up a first down with a 10-yard run by Kyle Alvarez on the game's first play but then managed just 38 yards of offense for the rest of the half.

The Spartans had a three-and-out on their first possession but then scored touchdowns the next six times they had the ball. Anderson and Ward each scored touchdowns to put De La Salle up 14-0 after the first quarter. Houston then connected with Jonathan Laird for a 44-yard touchdown strike midway through the second quarter, and the

Spartans never looked back.

"Bart throws on the money every time," Laird said. "He makes me look good."

A second touchdown pass from Laird to Shapiro with 18 seconds left in the half gave De La Salle a 35-3 lead at the break. California's lone touchdown came on a 2-yard plunge by Alvarez late in the third quarter.

"Obviously we're disappointed in the outcome," Billeci said. "We knew what to prepare for and we just didn't execute well enough."
