Deer Valley 34, Newark Memorial 3: At 5-foot-7 and 140 pounds, Deer Valley's Sean Combs is one of the smallest guys on the field. But it was the speedy senior running back who made the biggest plays in the No. 2-seeded Wolverines' rout of visiting No. 15 Newark Memorial in their playoff opener.
Combs, a California Interscholastic Federation state track meet qualifier in four events, showed off his unmatched quickness by breaking off touchdown runs of 76 and 63 yards to give the Wolverines a 14-0 lead 10 minutes into the game. He had 148 rushing yards in the first quarter alone and finished with 165.
"The blocking was on point," said Combs, who helped pace a Deer Valley rushing attack that picked up 380 yards. "Everything was on point actually, the blocking, the running, the passing."
Combs' big day was important for the Wolverines, who were without their top playmaker, quarterback Kristoff Williams. The senior was resting an injured ankle, but Deer Valley coach Rich Woods hopes Williams will be ready in time for next week's game.
Deer Valley's Brandon Williams also ran the ball well. He finished with 129 yards and a touchdown.
Kristoff Williams' replacement at quarterback, Mike Behr, completed 9 of 10 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown.
Newark Memorial (6-5) got its only points of the game on a 32-yard field goal by Anthony Benavente with 5:12 left in the second quarter.
This is the first time
