In last week's first round of the Central Coast Section football playoffs, there were some matchups between strangers, games between teams from the far south and far north of the section who typically don't play each other or know much about each other.
But now in the semifinals, all the teams left know each other well. Sometimes a little more than they'd prefer.
On Friday, Serra gets a rematch with Bellarmine in the Open Division semifinals at San Jose City, and Aragon plays longtime nemesis Los Gatos in Division II at Westmont High. Both games are at 7 p.m.
On Saturday it's a couple of intra-county matchups at Oak Grove High. Sacred Heart Prep plays Menlo School in Division IV at 11 a.m., and Terra Nova takes on San Mateo in Division III at 3 p.m.
"We are familiar with them,'' Aragon coach Steve Sell said of No. 1 seed Los Gatos. "The good news stops there."
No. 4 seed Aragon (7-4), which beat Mount Pleasant 42-7 in the first round, has lost eight in a row to Los Gatos by an average score of 32-7.
"To say we need to play a great game to win is an understatement,'' Sell said. "But really we're just thrilled to be playing. There are 20 teams left (in the CCS playoffs) and we're one of them."
The top four seeds in the Open Division all got beat last week. No. 8 seed Serra (6-5) did its part, knocking off No. 1 seed Pioneer 38-21.
"It's a new season for us," Serra coach Patrick
Walsh took the advice of assistant coach Eric Morin and gave inside linebacker Angel Bravo a shot at running back against Pioneer. Bravo responded with 117 yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns, one a 44-yard run to break open a close game in the fourth quarter.
"It was a third-and-six toss play,'' Walsh said. "He broke seven tackles. He took Serra High School and all its fans on his back and carried us to a Thanksgiving game."
But Serra lost starting center Jonny Maurino to a broken tibia.
"Someone else has got to step up," Walsh said. "Our team attitude was really great against Pioneer. Hopefully we can build on that for Bellarmine.''
This will be the third year in a row that Serra has played Bellarmine in the playoffs. The last two years Serra won in the regular season only to see Bellarmine win in CCS. Bellarmine (9-1-1) beat Serra 23-21 this year in West Catholic Athletic League play, so the Padres hope they have the last laugh this time.
JC SOCCER: The No. 3 seed Skyline College women's team (17-0-4) will host American River today at 2 p.m. in the second round of the state playoffs.
Skyline beat Yuba 1-0 Saturday in the first round. The Trojans are led by goalkeeper Marie Torres, a sophomore from Burlingame, with 16 shutouts; Taylor Hill, a center defender from Capuchino; and midfielders Laura Cremen and Midori Sera. Fonda Joab leads the team in scoring with 13 goals.
The Canada men are also still alive after a 1-0 win over West Valley. The No. 10 seed Colts (15-3-3) play at No. 2 Fresno at 2 p.m.
