Here's a division-by-division breakdown of Saturday's California Interscholastic Federation state cross country championships at Woodward Park in Fresno. Boys Division I Race time: 1:25 p.m. Local teams, individuals: Carlmont, Castro Valley, San Ramon Valley, Skyline, Michael Andemeskel (Oakland Tech), Derek Burgstaller (De La Salle), Kellen Cole (Amador Valley), Paul Johnson (De La Salle), Jaime Lopez (Castlemont), Donaciano Mata-Silva (Oakland), Robert Nguyen (Oakland), Ben Rich (Washington), Larkin Sherrill (Oakland Tech), Kyle Williams (De La Salle) Analysis: San Ramon Valley ran an outstanding race at the North Coast Section championships, and its one-through-five pack time of 25 seconds in that meet could possibly foreshadow a top-10 finish Saturday. Individually, Castro Valley's Ben Eversole could make an impact. Dana Hills-Dana Point and Royal-Simi Valley are the team favorites.Division II Race time: 9:40 a.m. Local teams, individuals: College Park, Alameda, David Brody (American), Kyle Feuerhelm (Woodside), Peter Gunn (Woodside), Andrew Snow (Arroyo) Analysis: College Park ran a strong race at the NCS championships and could make an impact in Saturday's race. The Falcons are ranked No. 9 in the state in the most recent CIF State divisional rankings on DyeStatCal.com. A top-10 finish individually is on the radar of the Falcons' Jeff Bickert. Mountain View is a strong team favorite. Elias Gedyon of Loyola returns to defend his title.Division III Race time: 10:10 a.m. Local teams, individuals: Campolindo, Las Lomas, Miramonte, Jesse Aston (Alhambra), Drew Davis (Terra Nova), Will Melton (Northgate) Analysis: The NCS has three state-ranked teams in this division, including Campolindo (fifth) and Las Lomas (seventh). Petaluma is ranked third. Palos Verdes-Palos Verdes Estates and St. John Bosco-Bellflower are the team favorites. NCS individual champion Erik Olson of Novato ran a strong race at the NCS championships to win with the fastest time of the meet (14:49) and is a solid contender for the state crown. He was fourth last year.Division IV Race time: 12:20 p.m. Local teams, individuals: St. Mary's, Simon Jacobs (Piedmont), Mitch Martin (Half Moon Bay), Mitchell Lee (Hillsdale), John Weber (Piedmont) Analysis: St. Mary's is ranked third in the division and looks to reach the state-meet podium (top three teams) for the second time in three years. The Panthers' Dan Maxwell is a contender for the individual title after his East Bay-leading time of 15:17 at the three-mile Hayward High course at the NCS championships. He was fifth last year. NCS champion Daniel Milechman of Tamalpais could also contend for the individual title. Laguna Beach, the team favorite, and McFarland are ranked first and second in the division, respectively.Division V Race time: 11:15 a.m. Local teams, individuals: Crystal Springs Uplands, Redwood Christian, St. Joseph Notre Dame, Mercer Cook (Head-Royce), Tim Hunt (College Prep), Jordan Lee (Chinese Christian), Darryl Sepulveda (Eastside) Analysis: Redwood Christian was second to University-San Francisco at the NCS championships, and moved down to third in the state rankings behind University (which is ranked second). But the Eagles have a strong individual title contender in Josh MacDonald and should be in the mix for the state title. MacDonald finished seventh last year. Woodcrest Christian-Riverside is a solid team favorite.Girls Division I Race time: 11:45 a.m. Local teams, individuals: Carlmont, Castro Valley, Monte Vista, Skyline, Ronah Baha (Oakland Tech), Natalie Dimits (Livermore), Liz Hebel (San Ramon Valley), Jessica Kong (Oakland), Mimi Le (Oakland), Colleen Lillig (California), Sandy Mazarlegos (Castlemont), Elaine McVay (California), Carina Novell (Granada), Ryane Yarborough (Castlemont) Analysis: Carlmont is ranked No. 9 in the state and is paced by Jessie Petersen, the Central Coast Section champion. Petersen was ninth last year at the state championships. Monte Vista and Castro Valley are aiming for top-10 team finishes. Lillig has big-meet experience this season and is eyeing a top-five placing individually. Great Oak-Temecula and Torrey Pines-San Diego are the team favorites.Division II Race time: 8:30 a.m. Local teams, individuals: Carondelet, College Park, Lauren Croshaw (Aragon), Alexandra Tate (Clayton Valley) Analysis: College Park is ranked eighth in the state in this division and is led by an experienced state-meet performer in senior Alycia Cridebring, a top-10 individual contender. Saugus-Santa Clarita is a strong team favorite. Defending champion Kaylin Mahoney of Saugus returns to defend her title. NCS champion Julie Nacouzi (Montgomery) will also contend for the individual title. Division III Race time: 9:05 a.m. Local teams, individuals: Acalanes, Campolindo, Marie Diaz (Bishop O'Dowd), Melissa Hastings (Hillsdale), Shelby Nickles (Dublin) Analysis: Campolindo and Acalanes are ranked sixth and eighth, respectively, in the state in this division. Campolindo's Carrie Verdon looks to improve on her 11th-place finish last year. The team favorites are Orange Lutheran and Corona del Mar-Newport Beach, but keep an eye on NCS champion Maria Carrillo, which made a big jump in the state rankings this week to No. 3. NCS champion Isabel Andrade (Petaluma) is a contender for a top-10 placing.Division IV Race time: 10:40 a.m. Local teams, individuals: Dougherty Valley, Half Moon Bay, St. Mary's, Anika Adeni (Moreau Catholic), Jamie Kent (Piedmont), Nicole Peterson (Piedmont) Analysis: Half Moon Bay, the CCS champion, is ranked No. 6 in the state. Dougherty Valley, which won its first NCS team title ever last week, moved to No. 10 in the division in this week's state rankings. NCS champion Theresa Devine of Marin Catholic could contend for a top-10 placing. The team title is up for grabs, with Coronado and Harvard Westlake-North Hollywood among the favorites.Division V Race time: 12:50 p.m. Local teams, individuals: College Prep, Woodside Priory, Crystal Springs Uplands Analysis: College Prep moved up to No. 2 in the most recent state rankings for the division, but NCS champion and state leader University-San Francisco is also contending for a state team title. College Prep is paced by junior Adrienne Strait, who was third at the NCS championships. Woodside Priory is ranked No. 7 in the state. NCS individual champion Lucy McCullough of Marin Academy is a state title contender. She was fifth last year. |
