Granada High brothers George Atkinson III and Josh Atkinson have orally committed to play football at Notre Dame in 2011, George III confirmed via text message Sunday evening.
The fleet-footed twins have been among the most highly recruited athletes in the Bay Area this summer, with each holding multiple scholarship offers.
George was recruited as an athlete, and he could play on either side of the ball in college. The 6-foot-2, 195-pounder plays both running back and defensive back for the Matadors. Rivals.com lists him as holding offers from schools such as Alabama and Miami, as well as every school in the Pac-10 except Stanford.
Josh has been recruited primarily as a defensive back, but the 6-foot, 180-pounder also plays both ways. He also held offers from the majority of the Pac-10.
The sons of former Raiders defensive back George Atkinson are also accomplished track and field stars, with each a standout in the sprint events. George won the 100- and 200-meter dash at the 2009 North Coast Section Meet of Champions, and Josh pulled the same double in 2010.
