HAYWARD -- Behind a 188-yard, two-touchdown rushing performance by Vince Volpatti, the host Vikings (9-3) defeated the Wildcats (8-4) and are headed to their first NCS championship football game in school history.

A familiar foe will be waiting for Valley Christian next week. Tri-County Athletic League-Rock Division rival Salesian upset No. 1 seed Middletown 21-13 and will face the Vikings at Chabot College for the NCS Division V title.

"They know us. We know them. It should be fun," said Valley Christian coach Jim Heal about the matchup with Salesian. When the two teams met in the regular season on Nov. 9, Valley Christian won 21-12 at Salesian.

On Friday at Chabot College, the No. 2 seed Vikings broke open the game in the second quarter against the third-seeded Wildcats.

Valley Christian took a two-touchdown lead on a 30-yard touchdown run by Isaiah Harris with 10:23 remaining in the first half. Ferndale answered back with a 77-yard drive, capped by an 8-yard scoring run by Kyle Chambers to cut the Vikings' lead to 14-6.

But Volpatti gave his team a double-digit lead to stay in the next play from scrimmage. The senior headed left on a run, then cut sharply right and followed his blockers for a 77-yard touchdown.

"I just had a lot of blocking," said Volpatti humbly about the touchdown. His first touchdown was a four-yard run late in the first quarter. He gained 130 of his yards in the first half.

The Vikings also received a four-yard touchdown run by Theman Taylor III with 1:39 remaining in the half, and held a 28-6 halftime advantage. Valley Christian outgained Ferndale 256-62 in the first half and the Vikings rushed for 318 yards in the game. Taylor produced the only score of the second half on a 10-yard run in the third quarter and finished with 58 yards on the ground.

Chambers had a team-high 85 yards rushing for Ferndale.
