SAN GABRIEL -- Nicolo Galletti of Foothill High and Jonathan Garrick of St. Francis-Mountain View each finished in the top five at the California Interscholastic Federation Boys Golf Championships on Wednesday at San Gabriel Country Club.
Austin Smotherman of Del Oro-Loomis was medalist, shooting a 4-under 67 to beat Beau Hossler Jr. of Santa Margarita-Rancho Santa Margarita by one stroke.
Galletti and Andrew Levitt of Santa Margarita each shot a 69 and tied for third. Garrick shot a 70 and finished alone in fifth.
A junior left-hander, Galletti led Foothill to a runner-up team finish as the Falcons had a five-player score of 21-over 376, two shots back of champion Granite Bay.
At the state championship last season, Foothill placed third as a team, and Galletti took second overall.
Foothill had five players break 80, including Roshan Chekuri (74), Brett Thawley (77) and Tanner Hughes (77). Six Foothill players broke 77 at the Northern California championship at Chico's Butte Creek Golf Club on May 21, when the Falcons took the team title and Granite Bay was third.
Galletti, who has orally committed to Arizona State, moved into title contention with a birdie on the par-4 15th hole, improving to 3 under. But his momentum stalled with a bogey on 16.
Garrick surged to 2 under with a birdie on No. 16, but he bogeyed the 18th.
Garrick -- who is headed to UCLA -- and Galletti have been stellar throughout the postseason. Garrick, who finished second at the Central Coast Section championships, shot a 4-under 68 at the NorCal tournament but lost medalist honors in a three-person playoff. Galletti wound up a stroke back in fourth.
At San Gabriel, Chekuri was 3 over at the turn before he birdied the par-3 11th and eagled the par-5 15th, which made him even par. He bogeyed three of his final four holes and finished 3 over.
