De La Salle High linebacker Michael Hutchings has orally committed to play at USC beginning in the 2013-14 season.
Hutchings is regarded not only as one of the top prospects in California, but also the country.
He is a four-star recruit according to both Rivals.com and Scout.com, and was ranked No. 51 in the latest Rivals 100 list of national prospects. Scout ranks him as the No. 3 outside linebacker in nation for the class of 2013.
"It was kind of unbeatable when you put it all together," Hutchings said of USC. "They've continually proven they're an elite school (academically and athletically)."
Hutchings said he picked the Trojans from a final four that included Cal, Washington and Oregon. He informed USC coach Lane Kiffin of his decision last weekend.
The heralded linebacker said he was definitely relieved to have the process over and done with.
"It's fun and exciting at first because you're getting all the attention. After a year, you start getting more serious with it," Hutchings said. "It's time for me to move forward with high school."
Hutchings will be one of the leaders on a De La Salle team hunting for its fourth consecutive California Interscholastic Federation Open Division bowl title. The Spartans begin the season on August 31 against Bellarmine at San Jose City College.
