South Fork High junior quarterback Joey Wittlake completed 18 of 34 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for 134 more to lead the Cubs to a 22-19 win over visiting John Swett Friday night in the opener for both teams.
"I will give a lot of credit to No. 4 (Wittlake)," John Swett coach Ron Spini said. "He basically won the game for them."
John Swett led 19-7 in the third quarter as a result of two rushing touchdowns by Alex Lazaridis and one by Vernon Bussey. Wittlake then scampered for a 15-yard TD and threw for a 20-yard score, both in the third quarter.
Lazaridis (20 rushes for 158 yards) and Bussey (14 carries for 144 yards) had superb games for John Swett, but the Indians offense hurt themselves with 13 penalties and four lost fumbles.
"I think they played really well, but I was very disappointed with our penalties," said Spini. "Overall, I am happy with how we played on the road tonight."
