Senior running back Zack Chang rushed for 218 yards and three touchdowns to lead the visiting Mustangs in this season opener for both teams. Teammate Mason Melin also had two first-half touchdown receptions in the win.

Monte Vista (1-0) scored the game's first touchdown on Nikita Zamora's 27-yard touchdown pass to Melin with 2 minutes, 23 seconds left in the first quarter. But Castro Valley (0-1) came back to take a 14-7 lead with a pair of second-quarter scores in this nonleague contest. Patrick Cheek broke free on a 32-yard run to score the Trojans' first touchdown with 8:30 left in the half and Robert Taylor's 52-yard run gave the hosts their only lead with 5:36 to go. However, Monte Vista drew even before halftime on Zamora's 10-yard pass to Melin.

The second half belonged almost completely to the Mustangs, as Chang scored on runs on 1, 8 and 6 yards. Marco Zamora set up the latter touchdown nicely with a 59-yard reception from Nikita Zamora.

Castro Valley completed the scoring when Cheek ran in from 2 yards with 23.2 seconds left. Nick Lima ran for the two-point conversion.
