A closer look: The defending Central Coast Section Division I champion Padres opened their season with a 30-6 win over Wilcox-Santa Clara on Aug. 31, then had a bye last week. Kevin McGee ran for two touchdowns in the season-opening win. Encinal also opened with a win, but lost 27-13 at Rodriguez-Fairfield last week. Isaiah Hunter ran for a score, and Taivale Tautalatasi threw a touchdown pass in the loss.
A closer look: The Lancers have put up points this season, averaging 27.5 points per game. Tennyson quarterback Gilberto Magallanes has completed 22 of his 36 passes for 399 yards and five touchdowns. The Dons have overwhelmed their first two opponents, outscoring them by a total of 88-14. Acalanes' DeShawn Johnson rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns in a 54-7 victory over Irvington on Sept. 7.
A closer look: The Knights have dominated this rivalry over the past decade, but the two teams have split the past two meetings. Northgate is coming off a 52-0 win over Alameda in which it ran for 470 yards. Las Lomas hurt itself with three turnovers in last week's 35-21 loss to Foothill.
A closer look: A rocky first half did little to stop the Spartans last week, with 28 unanswered second-half points giving De La Salle a 30-13 win over Mullen-Denver (Colo.). That had a lot to do with the defense, which held Mullen to just two first downs after halftime. St. Mary's suffered its first loss, with Central Catholic-Modesto beating the Rams 28-21 in their annual matchup. Central Catholic dominated, outgaining St. Mary's 306-122.
A closer look: The Lions capitalized on turnovers to score two second-half touchdowns and overtake host Hayward 29-18 last week. Cody Suckow completed touchdown passes to Austin Solari and Ivan Oseguera in the first half. The Trojans' record is deceiving. They ran for 391 yards in a 42-34 loss against powerful California, as Demareyeh Lane's rushed for 172 yards on 26 carries. Castro Valley has played two of the East Bay Athletic League's top teams tough, falling 35-22 against Monte Vista to open the season.
