Chidobe Awuzie is the multidimensional man for the Oak Grove High football team. And on Friday the Eagles needed all of Awuzie's talents to come out with a 24-21 win over Los Gatos.
Awuzie caught two passes for 116 yards, with both of his receptions going for touchdowns. He carried 13 times for 53 yards. (A 24-yard loss on a bad snap out of the wildcat brought his rushing total down.) He also had two interceptions, with the final one ending one last Los Gatos threat in the final minute and clinching the victory for Oak Grove.
"That was definitely the highlight," Awuzie said. "The defense had some breakdowns early on, so it was great to end it on defense."
Oak Grove (2-0) opened a 17-0 lead in the first half only to see Los Gatos close to within 17-14 on a 1-yard run by William Le early in the third quarter. That's when Awuzie got in front of a Los Gatos defender, won the jump ball for a lofted pass from Dallas Misaalefua, and went 32 yards for a touchdown that made it 24-14.
"He works so hard in practice and he's a great leader," Oak Grove coach Jay Braun said. "It's great to see him having success."
Los Gatos (1-2) responded with a 73-yard pass from Nick Bawden to Kyle Kevorkian with 3:55 left in the third quarter.
But then the offensive show ended and the defenses took over. Los Gatos made one more serious foray into Oak Grove territory and faced a fourth-and-4 from the Oak Grove 11 with 3:32 left. A field goal would
Los Gatos looked like it was having its way on the opening drive of the game. With Le (23 carries, 86 yards) carrying nine times the Wildcats powered it down to the Oak Grove 4 where they turned it over on downs.
Oak Grove immediately made its speed felt. Awuzie took a swing pass from Ray Cruz, juked a would-be tackler and went 84 yards for a touchdown.
"I gave the cornerback a move and it was off to the races," Awuzie said.
The Eagles added a 32-yard field goal by Carlos Yipez and a 6-yard touchdown run by Nick Bernardo on their next two possessions to go up 17-0. Bernardo also had a 69-yard run in the fourth quarter, finishing with 129 yards total on 12 carries.
