The Dons defense and a subperb performance from running back DeShawn Johnson led host Acalanes to a hard fought win against visiting Tennyson.
After a scoreless first half, the Lancers (2-1) looked primed to break the tie, movng the ball well into Dons territory.
But again, the Acalanes defense came up huge. Tommy Kresnak stripped the ball loose from a Lancer wide receiver and fell on it to give the Dons possesion, and the chance they needed.
Johnson did the rest. With his explosive bursts through the line of scimmage, shifty manuevering and refusal to go down, Johnson rushed for 204 yards on 21 carries. And with 8:49 remaining in the 3rd quarter, he broke the scoreless tie sprinting virtually untouched into the end zone from 23-yards out.
Also credit Acalanes' stout offensive line, who opened lanes for Johnson and others to run through all night. The Dons (3-0) ran for 322 yards, but were only able to convert those yards into 7 points.
Tennyson mounted a drive late in the 4th quarter with no timeouts remaining. But as quarterback Gilberto Magallanes looked for an open man downfield with 12 seconds left, he was sacked by Kresnak and time expired.
