Josh Briggs had a nifty 18-yard run for a touchdown to help lead the Emery High football team to a 22-0 win over Elsie Allen-Santa Rosa on Saturday at McClymonds High.

"I broke through the hole and I saw three or four people," Briggs said. "I just juked them. It was 31-dive. It's me going through the guard and center."

Said Emery coach Kenny Wright, "Briggs is a nice running back. I'm looking for good things. They execute in practice. They go over it every day in practice. They keep fighting, they keep fighting, they keep going."

The Spartans (1-1) got touchdowns from Briggs, Davyon Frey and Jerry Martin. Frey caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Nate Walker late in the first quarter to take the lead for good. Martin scored on a 15-yard run in the third quarter.

But the story was the defense. Elsie Allen (0-4) never really threatened and the handful of times the Lobos got into Emery territory, the Spartans rose to the challenge.

"Our defense played well," Wright said. "It's the way our coaching staff is. We've got a great coaching staff. Our kids want to learn. We've had some of these kids for three years. Now the football IQ has gone way up, they understand the schemes. It's time for a little success."

Said Briggs, "I think we're getting better each week, each day. I think we're going to the championship."
