FREMONT -- The Mission San Jose High football team snapped a 10-game losing streak with an emphatic 53-12 nonleague win over Marshall-San Francisco at Tak Fudenna Stadium on Saturday night.

After a sluggish start with no points in the first quarter, Mission erupted for 14 points in the second quarter and 20 in the third.

Mission's last win came in Week 2 of last season -- a 19-12 victory over De Anza.

"This is big for the program," Mission's first-year coach Sam Baugh said. "It's a product of the kids' hard work."

Mission (1-2) got a stellar performance from running back Ismail Shafi, who dashed for 215 yards on 17 carries and two touchdowns. He had 124 yards in the first half.

His first touchdown came from 17-yards out and capped a five-play, 43-yard drive. The Warriors then recovered an onside kick and that led to a five-play, 49-yard drive and a 15-yard touchdown run for Shafi.

"He's taken on a leadership role," Baugh said. "He's running with a fire under his rear end."

Through the air, Mission's Tamim Sarwary threw for 154 yards on a 12 for 19 effort that included three touchdowns. His top receiver was Idris Gettani, who caught four passes for 94 yards and two touchdowns.

Mission had a 14-6 lead at the half, but Baugh and the coaching staff weren't satisfied. It was only a week ago the Warriors had a halftime lead over Ygnacio Valley but went on to suffer a loss.

"We went into the locker room and challenged the seniors," Baugh said. "We had that lead last week and lost it. We have to learn how to play from in front."

In the second half, Mission erupted for 39 points. Leading the charge was running back Ben Torrez, who scored three touchdowns. He had nine rushes for 31 yards.

Marshall's lone bright spot in an otherwise penalty-filled game was running back Quintrell Anderson, who rumbled his way for 178 yards on 16 carries and a pair of touchdowns as it fell to 0-3.

Mission opens Mission Valley Athletic League play next week against Washington.
