The first two meetings between the Concord High and Heritage football teams were decided by five points or less and featured a single running back with over 200 yards and four touchdowns.
The third meeting was a direct contrast with Concord rolling to a 34-0 victory behind a 250-yard, three-touchdown passing performance from Wyatt Morrow.
"I am real proud of (Morrow)," Concord running Olito Thompson said. "All teams do is zero coverage and stuff the box against us. Morrow has matured so much, and he made great throws tonight."
The Minutemen (5-0) feature the Northern California single-season rushing record holder in Thompson, who busted loose for 260 yards and four scores in 2011 to lift Concord to a 24-19 victory at Heritage.
A year earlier, Concord won a 38-34 shootout at home, with Heritage tailback Kruger Story Jr. racking up 208 yards and four scores.
Thompson, who has orally committed to Washington State, had another solid performance Friday with 173 yards on 28 carries with two touchdowns, but it was Morrow's passing that broke the game open.
Leading just 6-0 with just over four minutes left in the first half, it was the Concord defense that fueled the momentum.
One play after Patriots linebacker Nick Zalec stripped the ball away from a Concord receiver, Concord blitzed Heritage quarterback Anthony Carter and sacked him as he tried to throw the ball to an outlet receiver.
The ball went backwards for
With just under two minutes left in the half, Morrow found Jacob Daynes for a 7-yard touchdown to make the score 12-0. It was the first of two scores for Daynes, who caught seven passes for 121 yards.
With Carter on the bench, backup Carson Cleverly hit Julian Johnson on an inside screen, and he broke it for a 45-yard gain. A roughing-the-quarterback penalty put the ball to the Concord 20. Zalec went 18 yards on the next play to move it to the 2.
After a Heritage timeout with 52 seconds remaining, the Concord defense made three straight stops, and when the Patriots mishandled the snap on third down, Andrew Trimble pounced on it for Concord to keep Heritage off the board.
Heritage turned the ball over four times in the game, three times on fumbles. Trimble had two of the recoveries.
Concord methodically pulled away with 22 second-half points.
