Looking to avoid three straight losses to open their Diablo Foothill Athletic League season, the Matadors picked up a big road win to get back on track, as the Dons' comeback attempt fell short.

"We know we're fighting for our playoff lives, and we know our backs are against the wall," Miramonte coach Jack Schram said. "We have to come out and play tough every game, and our defense came out and played tremendous in the first half."

Miramonte (3-4, 1-2 DFAL) used the ground game to build a 14-0 halftime lead, scoring touchdowns early in the first and second quarter, a 7-yarder from Conor Bruen and a 3-yard run by Nick Sheehan.

But it was a big passing play midway through the third that provided enough cushion. Facing third down from the shadow of their goal posts, Marshall Deutz took a short pass from Sheehan and turned it into a 90-yard scoring pass and a 21-0 lead.

Deutz finished with five catches for 164 yards.

Acalanes (4-2, 1-2 DFAL) made a charge late in the third quarter when Deshawn Johnson, who ran for 171 yards, scored from 10 yards to make it 21-7.

The Dons were threatening to score a few minutes later, but an interception at the goal line by Ray Clark ended the threat.
