The Berkeley High football team recorded their first win of the season, but it wasn't pretty as the Yellowjackets held on for a defensive struggle in the Western Alameda County Conference-Foothill Division opener for both teams at Sunset Field.

Berkeley's Akil Bordelon had three interceptions and ran for 62 of his 77 yards in the second half as the Yellowjackets (1-4, 1-0 WACC) controlled most of the second half.

Dana Carter gave the Farmers one last chance to pull off the win, picking off an Xavier Williams pass and returning it 36 yards to the Yellowjackets 17 with 2:05 remaining. The Berkeley defense tightened up and Hayward's Thompson Pulu was wide right on a 31-yard field-goal attempt.

Cater got Hayward (2-4, 0-1) on the board with 27 seconds left in the opening quarter with a 5-yard touchdown run. The point-after-touchdown kick was blocked, leaving the score 6-0 Hayward.

The Yellowjackets pulled ahead with 2:02 left in the half when Williams scored on a keeper on a fourth and goal from the 1.

Berkeley reached the red zone twice in the second half, but kicker Samuel Boyden missed field goal tries of 38 and 24 yards. Kyle Foote rushed for 73 yards on nine attempts and also picked off a pass for the Farmers.
