ATHERTON -- In a classic football matchup of power vs. finesse, the power team came out on top.

Maligi Maluia, South San Francisco High's 240-pound quarterback, scored on a 1-yard sneak on fourth down with 14.2 seconds left to give the Warriors a 43-39 win over previously unbeaten Menlo School on Friday.

"This proves that football is a physical game," South San Francisco coach Frank Moro said. "We felt we were the much more physical team."

South San Francisco (3-3, 2-0 PAL Ocean) ran 73 plays from scrimmage to 49 for Menlo School (5-1, 1-1). The Warriors had 61 running plays for 427 yards and added 96 yards passing.

"We thought we could outphysical them," said South City running back Keven Cunha, who carried 30 times for 152 yards. "Our game plan was to pound the ball and test them."

Menlo, which came in averaging 52 points per game, jumped out to a 14-0 lead and was up 26-14 at halftime. But the second half was all South City.

A 7-yard touchdown run by Orlando Garcia capped an 80-yard drive to close the deficit to 26-21. Then, after forcing a punt, the Warriors took the lead on a 40-yard run by Anthony Shkuratov (22 carries for 186 yards). Shkuratov's two-point conversion run made it 29-26.

From then on, it was back and forth. Menlo's Jack Heneghan (21 of 35 for 357 yards) hit Wiley Osborne on a 53-yard touchdown pass. South City responded with a 73-yard touchdown drive as Shkuratov scored on a 1-yard run. Heneghan scored on a 5-yard run with 4:42 left. That set the stage for the Warriors to drive 65 yards in 13 plays for the winning score.

"Our philosophy is to pound it all the time," said Shkuratov, who started the year at quarterback before trading positions with Maluia two weeks ago. "I want to give a big shout out to my offensive line."

Moro raved about the play of Divi Kumar and Anthony Amperosa on the left side of the line.

For Menlo, Connor Stastny had eight catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns, and Max Parker had an 84-yard kickoff return for a score, his fourth kickoff return for a touchdown this season.
