PLEASANTON -- The Amador Valley High football team has had some quality squads the past number of years. Yet the Dons have been unable to post a North Coast Section victory since 2004.

That drought came to an end Saturday night in the first round of the Division I playoffs, as the host Dons lit up the scoreboard in a 45-27 win over No. 12 Castro Valley (5-6).

The last time the fifth-seeded Dons won a playoff game was in 2004 in the NCS 4A East Bay semifinals -- a 35-14 victory over James Logan. The Dons (7-4) would go on to suffer a 41-0 loss to De La Salle in the finals.

On Saturday, the Dons scored five offensive touchdowns, one defensive touchdown and a special teams touchdown.

With the win, the Dons advance to play at No. 4 San Ramon Valley in the quarterfinals next Saturday at 7 p.m. The Wolves won the regular season meeting with the Dons 22-15 on Sept. 28, but Amador Valley has won five of six since with its only loss coming to De La Salle on Oct. 12.

Against Castro Valley, Amador quarterback Kyle Moreno was 12 of 19 with 193 yards passing and two touchdowns. His first throw was intercepted but then he completed his next seven passes.

"He's a great player," Amador coach Rick Sira said.

His top target was Grant Miller, who caught three passes for 101 yards that included a 73-yard touchdown reception with 8:08 left in the second quarter that gave the Dons an 18-7 lead.

Amador scored the game's first 12 points -- something Sira thought was key.

"It does make a difference," Sira said. "It does give you a little bit of confidence."
