NCS PLAYOFFS DIVISION I Quarterfinals Friday
A closer look: The Falcons defense made the big plays in a 28-17 win over Deer Valley in the first round, Foothill's first NCS win since 2009. Griffith Gates rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns, and Isaiah Langley's interception helped seal the win. Quarterback Kyle Kearns (9 for 14, 141 yards, TD) had a big second half. The EBAL co-champion Grizzlies, who had a bye in the first round, walloped Foothill 36-7 in league play on Sept. 28. The Grizzlies have an overpowering offensive line, and Karris Johnson has 1,162 yards and 18 rushing touchdowns.

: Both teams are on a serious roll entering this highly anticipated NCS Division I quarterfinal. Freedom has won eight straight and the Bay Valley Athletic League title, and Logan has cruised to five consecutive wins since its 20-13 overtime defeat to Del Oro-Loomis. The trio of QB Dante Mayes, RB Joe Mixon and WR Darrell Daniels makes the Falcons one of the top offenses in the area, but Logan counters with a defense that gives up an average of just eight points

A closer look: The host Broncos, who received a first-round bye, take on a Cougars team that has won four straight and eight of their past nine. Marty Leggatt scored three touchdowns for Newark Memorial in its 40-8 win over American last week. Although the Cougars held American to 129 yards rushing, they'll take on a Northgate team that has averaged 312 yards a game on the ground this season.

A closer look
: The Cougars' path back to the NCS Division III title game continues with a quarterfinal matchup against the unbeaten Tigers. Injuries are piling up for Campo, but the Cougars keep on winning. In a 38-19 win over Terra Linda last week, the Cougars took advantage of five turnovers while Andrew Zolintakis threw two touchdown passes and running back John Santaguida rushed for two scores. Analy hasn't played a close game since a 41-34 win over Miramonte on Sept. 7 and is winning by an average of 38 points. Campo will have to slow down Analy QB Darin Newman, who has thrown for 1,889 yards and 29 TDs.

A closer look: The Wildcats, who advanced to the NCS Division III title game last season, will play a better Matadors team than the one they defeated 31-14 on Aug. 24. Since returning from injury on Oct. 19, quarterback Drew Anderson has helped the Miramonte offense average just over 42 points per game. Anderson threw for 260 yards and five touchdowns in last week's 35-7 win over Tennyson. His counterpart, the Cal-bound Jared Goff, threw for 246 yards and four touchdowns in last week's 38-7 victory over Hercules.
