The Mustangs' mighty coaching tag team guided the Mustangs to another stellar season. Monte Vista earned its second North Coast Section Division I team title in the past three years, a second EBAL championship in the past three years and a berth in the semifinals of the Northern California tournament. In the section final, the top-seeded Mustangs, who finished the season 25-3, avenged a loss in the 2011 final against Tamalpais with a sweet 5-2 victory at Round Hill Country Club in Alamo. "That was awesome for the team and for the community," Favreau said of the win over Tamalpais. "We had lots of local support." Monte Vista also beat EBAL rivals Foothill and Amador Valley, both 6-1, and Eureka, 7-0, in NCS. In the NorCal tourney, Monte Vista vanquished Foothill-Palo Cedra 7-0 before falling 4-3 to Saint Francis-Mountain View in the semifinals. The Mustangs beat the Lancers 4-3 in the Fresno tournament. Monte Vista's resilience under pressure reflected well on its coaching staff. In the NCS Division I singles tournament, Monte Vista's Kaitlyn Haithcock and the doubles team of Betsy Main and Danielle Yancey both rebounded from semifinal losses to win third-place matches.
ALLISON CHUANG, Albany, Soph. -- With deft groundstrokes and a strong mental approach, Chuang upset defending champion Stephanie Lin of Pinole Valley in the North Coast Section Division I championship match, rallying for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win. Chuang, who was seeded second at NCS, is the No. 1 ranked USTA 16s singles player in Northern California.
JENNA FRIEDEL, College Prep, Fr. -- Friedel, a standout in the USTA Northern California 14s singles division, concluded a dominant season with an NCS Division II singles title. She had a 9-0 overall record and won every match handily. The aggressive baseliner beat Adrienne Sturgis of St. Patrick/St. Vincent 6-2, 6-1 in the NCS Div. II final.
KAITLYN HAITHCOCK, Monte Vista, Sr. -- The power-hitting East Bay Athletic League champion finished a career-best third in NCS singles after outslugging Dougherty Valley's Rickimae Torres 6-1, 1-6, 6-0, in the third-place match. Haithcock, the EBAL single champion, lost to Albany's Allison Chuang in the semifinals. Haithcock teamed with Betsy Main to finish second in NCS doubles in 2011. She also led the Mustangs to tEBAL and NCS team tournament titles
MERCEDES LE, James Logan, soph. -- Le had an impressive 38-1 record this season, including going 24-0 in team matches and earning an Mission Valley Athletic League singles title. Her only loss came against top seed Pinole Valley's Stephanie Lin 6-2, 6-2 in the NCS second round.
STEPHANIE LIN, Pinole Valley, Sr. -- The outstanding TCAL champion finished second in the NCS Division I tournament after winning the title in 2011. She dropped a memorable three-setter against Albany's Allison Chuang in the finals after beating Chuang twice this season.
RICKIMAE TORRES, Dougherty Valley, Jr. -- Torres won a third consecutive DFAL singles title and finished fourth in the NCS Division I tournament for the third straight year after reaching the semifinals. The hard-hitting Torres fell to No. 1 seed Stephanie Lin of Pinole Valley 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals. She fell to Kaitlyn Haithcock of Monte Vista in the third-place match.
