SAN JOSE -- Archbishop Mitty didn't take its first lead of the game until 5:25 was left in the game. But once that happened there was no holding back the Monarchs, who went on to a 60-50 victory over Serra in a West Catholic Athletic League game at Mitty.

No. 1 Mitty (11-3, 5-0) outscored No. 2 Serra 20-2 to start the fourth quarter, turning a 41-36 deficit into a 56-43 lead.

"The biggest thing was that we needed to engage on defense,'' Mitty coach Tim Kennedy said. "In that fourth-quarter surge we got some stops.''

Aaron Gordon led Mitty with 17 points and 14 rebounds but didn't start due to being late to a shootaround. Gordon entered the game with 4:10 left in the first quarter and Serra leading 6-0.

"I want to be on the floor all the time,'' Gordon said. "Not that the rest of the guys can't get the job done without me, but when I'm on the floor it brings more energy.''

Serra (12-3, 3-2) led 13-8 after one quarter and 21-17 at halftime. Henry Caruso (team-high 16 points) scored Serra's first 11 points of the third quarter to help keep the Padres on top.

"We came out flat,'' Kennedy said. "We weren't ready to go.''

But the fourth quarter was all Mitty.

Brandon Abajelo's jumper with 5:25 left gave the Monarchs their first lead of the game. After Gordon's three-point play capped an 11-0 run, Mitty led 47-41 and never looked back.

Abajelo and McAndrews scored 14 points apiece for Mitty. Andre Miller added 10 for Serra.

Piedmont Hills 41, Leland 40: J.J. Espanola made two foul shots with 12 seconds left as the Pirates (13-2, 5-0) held on for the BVAL Mount Hamilton Division victory.

Espanola scored 22 points and had all 13 of his team's points in the third quarter. Walter Bateast added 13. Senior Wes Owen led Leland (11-5, 4-1) with 16 points, making four 3-pointers.
