WALNUT CREEK -- Former NFL running back James Hodgins has been named the new varsity football coach at Berean Christian High, school athletic director Craig Lee announced Tuesday.

Lee replaces Mark Barcelon, who coached at Berean Christian for 14 years -- including the past six as the Eagles' head coach. Lee said Barcelon will remain with the team as the director of football operations and as the school's associate athletic director.

Hodgins, a San Jose native who now lives in Oakley, played a combined 78 games in the NFL for the St. Louis Rams, the Arizona Cardinals and the New York Jets from 1999-2006. He was a member of the Rams when they played in the Super Bowl in 2000 and 2002.

In six years as the Eagles' head coach, Barcelon had an overall record of 37-28 and made the North Coast Section playoffs the last four seasons.
