For a group of local high school football players, the Literacy Classic All-Star football game Saturday night at San Jose City College represents one more chance to audition for college recruiters.

With football letter-of-intent signing day less than two weeks away, a relatively small number of seniors from the Central Coast Section have committed to four-year colleges.

"I think the CCS gets overlooked," Saratoga coach Tim Lugo said. But "college coaches will be up here to watch the game."

The game, which is making its debut Saturday, matches seniors from much of Santa Clara and San Mateo counties against seniors from the southern end of the CCS.

Valley Christian's Mike Machado is coaching the North. He said Serra's Zack Kazakoff and Pioneer's Drew Fryhoff will handle his team's quarterback duties.

Wilcox's Roland Luke, Pioneer's Dominic Barnes and Independence's Jojo Valenzuela are the North's running backs.

Valley Christian's Ryan Severson (foot) might play if he gets medical clearance. Oak Grove's Nick Bernardo might also get carries, when he's not playing defense.

Bernardo said he has recovered from an ankle injury he suffered late in the season and is hoping to catch recruiters' eyes Saturday.

"Hopefully they'll see me," he said Wednesday.

The North's receivers include Mitty's Jacob Wesson, Menlo-Atherton's Evan Perkins, St. Francis' Austin Woodard and Los Gatos' Kyle Kevorkian.

"A lot of the guys are going to get a chance to play on both sides of the ball," Machado said, alluding to his team's lack of depth due to the significant number of seniors who aren't playing because of winter-sport commitments. "It should be fun."

  • Bellarmine College Prep's Kenneth Olugbode, the Mercury News football player of the year, said he considered playing, but it conflicted with basketball.

  • Oak Grove's Chidobe Awuzie also isn't playing because he is recovering from turf toe. The defensive back/running back said he has taken recruiting visits to San Jose State, Washington State and Colorado but added that he probably won't make a decision until signing day.
