Prior to the tip of Tuesday's girls basketball showdown with Deer Valley High, Heritage coach Dan Swan pointed at the wall behind the bleachers in the Patriots' gym and told the team, "everyone has a league title but us. It's time."

Sydney Berry and the rest of the Patriots got the message loud and clear, racing out to a 7-0 lead, forcing 13 first quarter turnovers and never trailing in a 51-46 victory over the Wolverines that put Heritage up two games in the Bay Valley Athletic League standings with three to play.

Berry ignited the quick start with 11 points and five steals in the first quarter, as the Patriots (18-5, 7-0 BVAL) took a 20-9 lead. The junior guard finished with a game-high 25 points.

"We knew she was very capable," Swan said. "She scored 20 against them in the first game. She is phenomenal at anticipating."

The Patriots have reached the North Coast Section playoffs the past four seasons and the Northern California tournament twice, but Deer Valley and Liberty managed to kept the Patriots off the top spot in the league until this season.

Sabrina Englestad added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Patriots in their third victory of the season against Deer Valley, including a win over their rivals in the West Coast Jamboree.

Deer Valley fell into an early hole and trailed by 14, 42-28, after a Berry layup with less than a minute left in the third quarter, but the Wolverines didn't give up.

Shelby Eastom and the Wolverines dominated the glass most of the night. The 5-foot-10 senior captain scored six of her team-high 12 points in the fourth quarter and finished with a game-high 15 rebounds. Deer Valley cut the lead to 47-42 with 3:58 remaining, but could get no closer.
