HAYWARD -- Remy Puou scored a career-high 30 points on Senior Night as the host Moreau Catholic High girls basketball team beat Mission San Jose 50-32 to clinch the outright Mission Valley Athletic League title on Tuesday.

It's the first league crown for the Mariners (20-6, 11-2 MVAL) since they won the now-defunct Hayward Area Athletic League title during the 2007-08 season.

"This is a huge accomplishment," the 6-foot-1 Puou said. "It shows the MVAL that we're not scared just because we're the new team on the block."

Puou also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

Moreau had a slim 20-19 lead at the half and watched Mission (15-10, 9-4) take a 21-20 lead on a bucket by Grace Lee to open the third quarter.

But that led to an 8-0 run capped by a Puou three-point play that gave the Mariners a 30-21 lead. Moreau closed the third with a 7-0 run and had a 37-26 lead after three quarters.

"At halftime, coach (Jack Kennedy) said we had to go out and play hard and we couldn't be content with a small lead," Puou said. "We had to do whatever it took."

Moreau's Louisa Bevilacqua dished out five assists and teammate Kaitlin Leguidleguid scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds.

Mission, which got nine points from Lee, had 19 turnovers -- seven in a crucial third quarter. Still, Mission battled valiantly and got to within 30-26 on a layup by Lee with just over 2 minutes left in the third.

But the Warriors were held scoreless the rest of the quarter and didn't score another bucket until there was 3:29 left in the game. By then, the Mariners had opened up a commanding 43-28 lead.
