BVAL's best race at CIF Championships Liberty High's Kai Bohannon and Emily Wylie and Heritage's Solomon Demeku all competed at the California Interscholastic Federation cross country championships Nov. 30 at Woodward Park in Fresno. Bohannon, a freshman, finished 91st in the Division I girls race, running the 3.1-mile course in 19 minutes and 7 seconds and teammate Wylie was 104th in 19:21. In the Division I boys race, Demeku was 138th in 16:46. De La Salle was the top local team in Division I boys, placing seventh. San Ramon Valley was the top East Bay team in Division I girls, placing 17th.
Pittsburg's season ends in semifinals The California High football team reeled off 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to earn a 31-17 win over host Pittsburg on Nov. 30 in the North Coast Section Division I semifinals. The victory avenged a 35-33 loss to the Pirates on Sept. 6. Pittsburg trailed just 14-10 in the second quarter, but running back Harris Ross, who had 128 yards on 11 carries in the first half, including a 40-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, injured his leg on a run late in the first half and did not return. Pittsburg, the Bay Valley Athletic League champion, finished the season at 10-3. The Grizzlies (11-2) will face De La Salle (12-0) in the championship game on Dec. 7 at Dublin High. The Spartans beat California 55-0 on Nov. 8.
Freedom's Mixon announces final four Freedom football star Joe Mixon announced his final four teams via Twitter on Tuesday morning, and Cal was one of the four teams. In no particular order, the running back announced that UCLA, Cal, Wisconsin and Oklahoma had made his final four. Mixon, a running back, is one of six finalists for the U.S. Army national player of the year award. He rushed for 1,704 yards and 28 touchdowns in 11 games his senior year, including 470 yards and nine touchdowns in two NCS playoff games. He tallied 4,281 rushing yards and 76 touchdowns during his three-year varsity career.

Stars of the week Nsimba Webster, Deer Valley, football -- Webster, in his final high school game, ran for two touchdowns and threw for two touchdowns in Deer Valley's 57-27 loss to De La Salle on Nov. 29.
