Dublin boys win NCS soccer crown in PKs The Dublin boys soccer team won the NCS Division II boys soccer title by beating Hercules 3-1 in a penalty kick shootout after the teams tied 2-2 on March 1 at Dublin. The Gaels (21-2-4) got a clutch effort in the shootout from goalkeeper Jeremy Schuler, who stepped in for the injured Andrew Totaro. Christian Brosius and Anthony Herrington scored for the Gaels in regulation play.

Monte Vista wins NCS girls soccer title The Monte Vista High girls soccer team finished an unbeaten season with a 2-1 win over rival San Ramon Valley on March 1 in the North Coast Section Division I final at Dublin High. The Mustangs (23-0-2) got goals from Amanda Outcalt and Lindsay Rood, and the Wolves (17-2-7) got a goal from Morgan McGarry. No. 1 seed Monte Vista beat College Park 1-0 in the semifinals on Feb. 27, and the No. 2 Wolves bested Berkeley in a penalty kick shootout after a 2-2 tie on Feb. 26.

Becker officially named Wolves coach Aaron Becker was officially hired as San Ramon Valley's football coach last week, removing the interim tag he had since mid-November. Wolves athletic director John Raynor said Becker's hire was approved by the San Ramon Valley school board Feb. 25 and Becker was introduced as the coach to the students Feb. 27. Becker teaches physical education at San Ramon Valley and played quarterback at the school in the mid-1990s, graduating in 1997. He had been the Wolves' interim head coach since Mark Kessler was fired as coach one day before the team played its first NCS Division I playoff game. San Ramon Valley won that game, 42-24 over San Leandro, but lost 31-17 to California the following week and finished the season with a 7-5 record.

Wolves, Mustangs win basketball openers Monte Vista and San Ramon Valley's boys basketball teams won their NCS Division I playoff quarterfinal games on Feb. 28. The Wolves bested Pittsburg 78-72, and the Mustangs topped San Leandro 49-44. Standout guard Jerry Karczewski had a hot hand for the Wolves with a game-high 29 points, including six three-pointers.

On deck CIF championships, boys wrestling, March 7-8, 9 a.m. -- Granada's Angel Beltran and Amador Valley's Tommy Yozzo will top a good cast of Tri-Valley area competitors at the state tournament.
Stars of the week Angel Beltran, Granada wrestling -- Beltran defeated Mission San Jose's Enrique Green in the final of the 145-pound weight division at the NCS championships at Newark Memorial High on March 1. Milan Moses, Dublin basketball -- The guard had a game-high 21 points in a 62-35 win over American on Feb. 28 in the NCS Division II quarterfinals. Tanner Hughes, Foothill golf -- Hughes shot an even-par 35 to lead the Falcons to a 189-202 nonleague win over Dublin at Castlewood Country Club on Feb. 26 Chris Parkinson, San Ramon Valley golf -- Parkinson shot a 4-under 32 at San Ramon Country Club in the Wolves' nonleague loss against Dublin on Feb. 24. He also had a 37 at Crow Canyon Country Club and a 39 at Sunol Valley Golf Course in wins. Jerry Karczewski, San Ramon Valley basketball -- He had 29 points in the Wolves' win over Pittsburg in the NCS quarterfinals. Morgan McGarry, San Ramon Valley soccer -- She scored goals in the Wolves' NCS semifinal win over Berkeley on Feb. 26 and in a 2-1 loss to Monte Vista in the championship game. Lindsay Rood, Monte Vista soccer -- Rood had a goal and an assist in a 2-1 win over San Ramon Valley in the NCS Division I championship game on March 1.
